Hear that deafening silence? It’s the silence that comes about when “drill baby, drill” advocates are put in their place due to the biggest environmental disaster in American history. But of course their silence is only carrying over to the blame game. Sarah Palin even made a comment about how environmentalists caused the oil disaster due to their stance against on shore drilling. Um, have you ever seen what on shore drilling looks like? You know what, I really do not even want to take the time to analyze and debunk her statement because my head hurts already from just the idea of her walking and breathing. There are a lot of contributing factors to why this disaster happened in the first place. It is not a Republican issue or a Democratic issue entirely. It is everyone’s fault. Their fault, my fault, your fault. I’ll explain:
Republicans and Dems:
George W. Bush’s puppet master Dick Cheney is at fault for pushing deregulation in order for oil companies to vastly expand their wealth. He did not want his buddies in the oil industry to spend $500,000 for a fail-safe cap that would ensure that this type of thing would not happen. Instead, let’s just wait for something really really really bad to happen and spend $14 or more billion dollars to fix not only coastal economies, but preserve the wildlife that managed to live. Sounds much better. Democrats: You know, they appear to mean well but their pockets are just as greasy as the Republicans. In fact, they receive considerable contributions from these industries and are just as guilty of conveniently overlooking these serious matters, and are just as guilty for not pushing regulation all these years. I just cannot seem to fathom why BP alone had over 760 violations, while Exxon, Shell, and others had between 1 and 8. Seriously right now? But I want to take a moment to step away from blaming the government, because all too often we forget why we have these problems in the first place.
You know, back in the late 70s during the oil crisis, Jimmy Carter criticized our consumption of oil in this country and how it was a national security. Here’s an excerpt of his televised speech:
“In little more than two decades we’ve gone from a position of energy independence to one in which almost half the oil we use comes from foreign countries, at prices that are going through the roof. Our excessive dependence on OPEC has already taken a tremendous toll on our economy and our people. This is the direct cause of the long lines which have made millions of you spend aggravating hours waiting for gasoline. It’s a cause of the increased inflation and unemployment that we now face. This intolerable dependence on foreign oil threatens our economic independence and the very security of our nation. The energy crisis is real. It is worldwide. It is a clear and present danger to our nation. These are facts and we simply must face them….I’m asking you for your good and for your nation’s security to take no unnecessary trips, to use carpools or public transportation whenever you can, to park your car one extra day per week, to obey the speed limit, and to set your thermostats to save fuel. Every act of energy conservation like this is more than just common sense — I tell you it is an act of patriotism.
Our nation must be fair to the poorest among us, so we will increase aid to needy Americans to cope with rising energy prices. We often think of conservation only in terms of sacrifice. In fact, it is the most painless and immediate way of rebuilding our nation’s strength. Every gallon of oil each one of us saves is a new form of production. It gives us more freedom, more confidence, that much more control over our own lives.”
He lost by a landslide.
So now we are facing our demons. And yes, I’m talking to you owner of the Dodge Hemi with the 3 foot lift and 40 inch tires. We are the ones that let it get us this far. Compare it to being a crackhead — yeah, he may blame the dealer all he wants but at the end of the day he has to take responsibility for his actions. We cannot base our lifestyles on a non-renewable source of energy! It’s fucking stupid! We need to demand alternative sources of energy. The same environmentalists demanding this — were silenced by people who need to form an allegiance with a political party. And now it takes a disaster of EPIC proportions to FINALLY get people to wake the fuck up?? Does this seriously have to happen each and every time??
You want to know why I am so pissed off? Florida is my home — the Gulf is one of my favorite places to visit here in Florida, and the beaches are breathtaking. Now all I see are images of oil soaked birds, festering carcasses turtles and dolphins blanketed in the dark liquid — the impending dooms this state faces. The beaches will be covered in blobs along with the unbearable smell of oil and gas. I still would be pissed off if this happened anywhere else, but this time this shit is personal.
