Mainstream Music Makes You Dumb

himom1Finally, something I can’t really argue about that makes me feel like a genius today. Some guy with a PhD named Virigil Griffiths recently discovered something miraculous in his research: Beyonce fans are stupid. So are Lil Wayne fans. And just about anyone else who follows mainstream pop/hip-hop culture. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t completely agree with mainstream unless I’m partying — probably like most of you. But if you chill and listen to mainstream music, I guess that supposedly makes you retarded.

Griffiths based his research on the SAT scores and musical tastes of each subject. What he found out was, as he likes to call it, ‘hilarity incarnate’:

“Those who prefer indie music are most intelligent, while pop, rock and gospel fans were all ranked at the lower end of the scale.

Fans of legendary acts like Queen, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, Frank Sinatra and Bob Marley are all around average and above when it comes to intelligence, according to Griffiths.

Radiohead, U2 and Bob Dylan all have intelligent fans, he said.

Fans of Beyonce, Timberlake and Jay-Z all tended to score below 1,000 on SAT scores, with the average being a mark of 1071 out of 1600.

Fans of Beethoven were way ahead of the rest with an average score of over 1300.”

I still can’t understand why anyone would base intelligence off of SAT scores, but I can see how this makes sense.

And this is what he has to say before every test: “I’ve listened to artists who after listening to I thought to myself ‘Wow… loving this rubbish says a lot about someone and how much they got going on in their head’. Could one’s musical tastes say something about intelligence?”

All this lead me to one question: who in the hell listen to Beethoven on a regular basis in highschool willingly? Not counting you hipsters either.

  1. Heh, that’s an interesting study. Correlation != causation and all that, but at least now we have a larger sample to base what everyone kinda knew deep down already. A shame, really.

What does it say about those of us that like a bit of everything?
